Flipping the humble fritter into an iconic event
With a new stadium to fill and a new strategy to bring visitors and business to Whangarei, the District Council’s events team were looking for ideas. They needed an event to help build the city’s reputation as a destination and give loyal locals an iconic event in their summer calendar. Across NZ there are a myriad of events, music and food and wine festivals. We had to create something truly unique and quintessentially Northland that would appeal to a wide variety of people.
A kiwi favourite – the humble fritter.
From which we created the Fritter Festival. Putting the challenge out to food vendors from across Northland, asking them to conjure up the best Fritter, bring it along and cook it for the public to taste test.
Fritter (as it’s known locally) attracts a wide audience of locals and visitors to enjoy Northland food and wines while being entertained by top NZ bands. Launched in 2012 Fritter Festival has now become a not to be missed event in Northland’s summer calendar.
