Women's Rugby World Cup

Client Mastercard

In 2022, women’s sport worldwide took a major step forward, with the Women’s Rugby World Cup happening right in our backyard. Mastercard wanted to capture the priceless moments. Partnering with Octagon and Aotearoa designer Nichola Te Kiri, they created the Mastercard Player of the Match Sonic Trophy—a unique award that captured the energy of each game through the sounds of the stadium.

That’s where bigfish came in. Our job? To tell the story of this incredible trophy in a way that felt real, meaningful, and true to its roots. Working alongside Mastercard, Octagon, director Laura Sargisson, and cultural partners, we created a powerful longform video, plus shorter social media content, all translated for a global audience. We shared the Māori tradition of oral storytelling, showing how the Sonic Trophy embodies the role of the kaikaranga, the guardian of memories.

We didn’t stop at video—our team also captured stunning imagery, event footage, and behind-the-scenes moments of the trophy’s journey. This project wasn’t just about rugby; it was about celebrating culture, equality, and the spirit of sport. And we’re proud to have played a part in putting Aotearoa on the world stage.
