Whangarei District Council regularly consults with the community about its plans. With a growing and changing community they wanted to swap a formal process, full of long winded printed documents and public meetings, to reach new audiences. The 2019-2020 Annual Plan was the ideal opportunity to explain the work Council does and seek feedback in a more contemporary way.
The Annual Plan sets out Councils plans, projects and budgets for the year ahead. We designed a campaign that would communicate using visual storytelling from a community perspective – taking the information to the people through video, social media and event presence.
The Annual Plan video tells the story of a teenager travelling through the District, meeting friends and finding out about Council plans along the way. The video combines stunning imagery of the Whangarei District, clever dialogue and the essential facts about Council’s plans. This campaign allowed Council staff and Elected Members to get out and about to community events, supported by great content presented in a fully branded 16ft shipping container. The video launched on social media and immediately gained great traction, not only getting more feedback than usual but also increasing the Council’s Facebook following along the way. This new style communicates using visual storytelling from a community perspective.
